Based in Southern California, with five offices in Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego and San Bernardino counties, New Horizons Computer Learning Centers of Southern California was recently named Red Hat Training’s Ready Partner of the Year at the annual Red Hat Training Partner Conference in Las Vegas, NV. As part of the world’s largest independent IT training company, New Horizons Computer Learning Centers of Southern California is a learning solutions provider for the industry’s top vendors, and has been a Red Hat Training Partner since 2010. We recently caught up with New Horizons Computer learning Centers of Southern California’s CEO, Kevin Landry, for his thoughts regarding the state of the training industry today and how it will change tomorrow.
Who are you training these days?
The market we’re in is a little bit unique. 70% of our business is considered B2B or enterprise business, companies like Disney, Southern California Edison, and Ingram Micro. Working with Red Hat over the past several years, we’ve continually seen this business double year after year. Developers in training is the largest growth area, but the greatest area of interest we’ve seen increase has been in the consumer market, where individuals fund their own training. I’d say 30% of the individuals that we train fall into this latter group, and are funding training on their own or have alternative government funding, such as VA benefits or unemployment benefits.
What are the most common reasons people are getting trained right now?
Skill shortage is the main reason that individuals are seeking training, and being that it’s more likely these days to see Linux or Red Hat in a job description, we’ve seen a lot of growth in consumers seeking Red Hat Certifications.

Rhett teaches in Southern California, a significant growth region for Red Hat Training. That growth is a result, in part, of his advocacy of Red Hat Training among his students. Without being a “salesman”, he talks to students about Red Hat’s training programs, training tracks, and other courses that will help them, resulting in an extremely satisfied, customer base.

Istanbul, Turkey, 8-9 November
Over 100 attendees gathered together this November for Red Hat’s 2012 EMEA Training Partner Conference, taking over Istanbul’s Elite World Hotel. Partners and individuals from South Africa to Finland to Morocco to Russia and all points in between shared experiences and learned new ways to train and certify IT professionals, and how to optimize the customer experience. Those in attendance were partners and individuals that help us deliver training throughout Europe and the world, including Certified Training Partners (CTPs), Delivery Partners, Contractor Instructors, and Training Resellers and Distributors.
The week included presentations covering such topics as industry trends, quality approaches of Red Hat courses and various Red Hat offerings, including virtual training, new courses, and certifications, as well as a keynote from Werner Knoblich, VP and General Manager of Red Hat EMEA. Attendees were also able to share best practices with one another through numerous business and technical sessions, which included sales and marketing topics for reseller and CTP attendees, as well as middleware and infrastructure topics.

Delivering training since 1991, Pete was named Red Hat FY12 architect-level instructor of the year for North America, and recently became a Red Hat Certified Architect, the highest level of certification for Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Many years ago, when I first became aware of the different Red Hat certifications, I thought nothing of what it meant to be an RHCT or RHCE. These appeared to be similar to other vendor’s certifications, like Sun’s SCSA and SCNA, and had similar value to me. Upon further investigation, it became apparent that while those certifications were gained through online testing methods that used multiple-choice questions and fill-in-the-blank essays, Red Hat used hands on, practical testing. It’s one thing to say that you know how to do something and it’s another to prove that you know how to use it, by actually setting up a server and making it perform as expected.

We recently chatted with Spectrum’s Nat Emery to get his thoughts about today’s training landscape today and where it may be headed tomorrow.

Who is getting trained these days?
The majority of my (personal) sector is government related. With the government mandating certifications for a lot of their contractors, that sector – federal contractors, federal government – is really making the investment and spending money on training. That’s not to say private industry is not doing it. To me, the federal sector are the ones driving the need where professionals must have to maintain those levels of certifications to stay in those contracts, and are putting a lot more emphasis on training.
