Calling all OpenStack professionals – we need more of you out there, and quickly.
For enterprises looking at or beginning to deploy OpenStack, the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is an important assessment. While the focus is usually placed on technology features and enterprise readiness, it is just as critical to factor the availability of specialists for deployment and operation1.
Owen Rogers, Ph.D., a senior analyst at 451 Research explains: “Finding an OpenStack engineer is a tough and expensive task that is impacting today’s cloud-buying decisions. (But) As OpenStack matures and the pool of available engineering staff increases, buyers can expect the TCO of deploying OpenStack to improve.”
A recent Red Hat-commissioned TechValidate survey drew a similar conclusion. Almost half of the IT decision makers and professionals that were surveyed from around the world citied the lack of internal IT skills as the biggest barrier to OpenStack adoption.
Having a team of skilled OpenStack IT professionals thus can help an enterprise be more agile in deploying and operating the OpenStack platform. This skilled staff may also help their organisations use IT budgets better as the development, management and scalability of apps become quicker.
It first happened to Linux; now it’s OpenStack
Red Hat sees OpenStack as being where Linux was a decade ago. Just as Linux attracted the best and brightest into the stables of early adopters, OpenStack is drawing top developers in the same way.
Being a pioneer in training for certified cloud architects, and having had the experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Red Hat’s current OpenStack curriculum is extensive and mapped to core skills desired by industry.
Today, those seeking basic OpenStack skills can set their sights on the Red Hat OpenStack Administration course, which will train them to implement a cloud computing environment using the OpenStack platform. It also helps prepare students for the related certification exam.
An IT professional who has earned the Red Hat Certified System Administrator in Red Hat OpenStack certification would have demonstrated the skills, knowledge and abilities needed to create, configure and manage private clouds using Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform.
For higher level competencies, Red Hat is launching a new Training and Certification track for engineers. This progressive learning path lets engineers acquire Red Hat Certified System Administrators (RHCSA-OS) in OpenStack and graduate to Red Hat Certified Engineer in OpenStack (RHCE-OS).
